    The South Korean Customs Agency yesterday ( Tuesday burned a large quantity of contraband which had been uncovered during an extensive ant-smuggling campaign. The haul was valued at & 140,000 sterling ( 330,000 dollars ).

    Foreign commodities, burned on a beach beside the Han River near Seoul, included fabrics, cigarettes, cosmetics, liquor and other items confiscated from smugglers. The customs forces and accumulated such a store of contraband during their clamp-down on smugglers that they decided to burn it.

    Much of contraband came from raids on black markets by special teams organised by the Customs agency. During their operations, the teams uncovered an extensive black market organisation operated by shops, chain stores and department stores throughout Seoul.

    Customs officers said that most of the contraband had been manufactured in the United States.
