  • Description

The Italian warships, Andrea Doria and the Vittoria Veneto called at Singapore on Wednesday (1 August) after rescuing Vietnamese boat people in the South China Sea. They set off on the 25th of July in the specially renovated ships to rescue as many refugees as they could, and returned on Wednesday saying they are convinced there are no more "boat people" near Malaysia's east coast.

SYNOPSIS: The Italian government provided resources for "Mission Far East" soon after the recent Geneva Conference on Refugees. The Andrea Doria, along with two other ships, were outfitted with hundreds of ??? and crews that included medical teams and Vietnamese-speaking clergy. The Vietnamese government has criticised missions such as this, saying the presence of the vessels in the area might encourage more refugees to leave Vietnam.

But a spokesman for the project denied this was the intention. The rescue mission ended after more than nine hundred people had been taken aboard.

The Vittoria Veneto also arrived filled to capacity with refugees, some of whom had not eaten for twelve days and were near death when found. The Vietnamese will be taken to new homes in Italy.
