A crowd of about one-million people acclaimed the Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, at a public meeting on Dacca racecourse Friday (March 17).
She is the first foreign head of State to visit Bangladesh. As she spoke to the huge crowd, police arrested and beat several suspected members of the Pro-Pakistan Razakar Militia, which spread terror among the local population during the Pakistan army's crackdown in 1971.
Later they showed knives and a pistol they said they'd recovered from these arrested.
Some items on Mr.s Gandhi's schedule were reported cancelled for security reasons.
SYNOPSIS: In Bangladesh on Friday abut one-million people attended a public meeting of welcome for the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
Several people in the huge crowd word arrested and many were severely beaten by the Bangladesh Army men and volunteers.
Those arrested were suspected of being members of the Razakar militia--a pro-Pakistan group which spread terror among the local Bengali population in 1971 during the Pakistan Army's crackdown.
The army later showed newsmen arms and weapons they said they confiscated when making the arrests. Mrs. Gandhi's journey to the racecourse from the Government residence was conducted under strict security precautions.
The Indian Prime Minister is the first foreign head of Government to visit Bangladesh and she was given a rapturous welcome.
The Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hailed Mrs. Gandhi as a leader of oppressed and freedom-loving humanity.
Speaking first in Bangali and then in Hindi Mrs. Gandhi warned the people of Bangladesh against possible interference from outside powers. India and Bangladesh, she said, would always stand united against oppression anywhere in the world.
As Mrs. Gandhi spoke armed soldiers entered the crowd to arrest demonstrators.
For the Indian Prime Minister it was Day One of a two-day visit to Bangladesh, and the only public appearance she made. Other events on her schedule were reportedly cancelled for security reasons.
In the clashes at the racecourse meeting a number of people were injured and had to be given first aid.
Sheikh Mujib and Mrs. Gandhi were expected to hold talks on economic relations between their countries.
