The Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hailed Mrs. Gandhi as a leader of oppressed and freedom-loving humanity.

As Mrs. Gandhi spoke armed soldiers entered the crowd to arrest demonstrators.

For the Indian Prime Minister it was Day One of a two-day visit to Bangladesh, and the only public appearance she made. Other events on her schedule were reportedly cancelled for security reasons.

Sheikh Mujib and Mrs. Gandhi were expected to hold talks on economic relations between their countries.
