Two of AUSTRALIA's oddest creatures will make a strange air cargo for AMERICA shortly. In the BRISBANE Museum attendants are preparing to transport across the Pacific -- QUEENSLAND Lung Fish -- amongst the world's oldest living species. Two of them have been ordered by a TEXAS Acquarium.
An archaic creature, the lung fish ancestors can be traced back for two-hundred-million years. The fish live and breathe both in and out of water. The initial approach about the fish was made through the Australian Ambassador to AMERICA -- Sir PERCY SPENDER. The lung fish, despite their slippery liveliness, are moving towards extinction. It's clear how two hurt themselves threshing against the sides of their boxes on the way down to BRISBANE.
The Director of the Museum, Mr. GEORGE MACK, points to the gills which make the fish unique. They function more like the human lung than the gill of a fish. The fins too are unlike ordinary fins. The fish is thought to have once been amphibious, and used its fins for walking on land.
Hardy and powerful, lung fish are sluggish and covered with a slimy tissue. On the trip to America next week the fish will travel in crates specially sent out from America. They'll be kept in fresh water, and given raw beef to eat during the flight... from QUEENSLAND to a TEXAS Acquarium.
