PRESIDENT NIXON'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF NUCLEAR AID TO EGYPT TOOK WASHINGTON MOSTLY BY SURPRISE. ONLY A FEW SAID THEY KNEW AHEAD OF TIME AND MOST PREDICT WE WILL SHORTLY HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT OF SIMILAR AID TO ISRAEL. A FEAR OF MANY CONFESSMEN IS THAT THE EGYPTIANS AND ISRAEL IS WILL QUICKLY TURN THEIR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS TO THE PRODUCTION OF BOMB-MKAING MATERIAL, REGARDLESS OF THE SAFEGUARDS BUILT INTO THE PROGRAM.

(VO) SEN AIKEN, HOWEVER, WAS NOT TOO CONCERNED ABOUT THE AGREEMENT SINCE, HE SAID, IT WOULD BE 15 YEARS BEFORE THEY COULD PRODUCE A BOMB, EVEN IF THEY WANT TO. SUPER AT :00 SEN GEORGE AIKEN, R-VT (VO) CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON ATOMIC MELVING PRICE SAID HE KNEW OF THE AGREEMENT LAST WEEK AND EXPECTS THE PLAN WILL HAVE TO BE CLEARED THROUGH HIS COMMITTEE BEFORE IT GOES INTO EFFECT.
