TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: JUST ARRIVED BACK ON A REFUGEE PLACE FROM PAULIS IS MR. COLIN BUCKLEY, A MISSIONARY, WHO'S HAD A VERY EXCITING 48 HOURS. WHAT DID YOU DO MR. BUCKLEY?

ANSWER: WELL, SINCE AUGUST 19TH, WE'VE BEEN UNDER HOUSE ARREST. AND THEN, ON THURSDAY, THE PARATROOPERS CAME AND RESCUED US, AND WE WERE TAKEN TO THE AIRFIELD AND THEN, LAST NIGHT, WE SLEPT AT THE .. AND WERE GUARDED BY THE BELGIAN PARATROOPERS."

INTERVIEWER: I UNDERSTAND YOU LED THE PARATROOPERS TO RELIEVE THE MISSION POST OF NALA?

ANSWER: YES, NALA IS A MISSION STATION ABOUT 12 MILES AWAY AND I VOLUNTEERED TO LEAD THE RELIEF PARTY TO RESCUE FOUR BELGIANS AND WE RESCUED THE TWO ENGLISH MISSIONARIES. AND WE FOUGHT ALL THE WAY THERE AND ALL THE WAY BACK. WE KILLED AT LEAST THREE REBELS, THAT I SAW, AND MANY, MANY, MORE WERE WOUNDED, MUST HAVE BEEN.

    INTERVIEWER: WERE THEY WELL ARMED?

ANSWER: NO, THEY WERE ARMED WITH NOTHING BUT PIECES OF STICK OR A PIECE OF METAL OF SOME KIND.

INTERVIEWER; BUT THEY WERE RESISTING FIERCELY?

ANSWER: THEY WERE RESISTING WITH THE TERRIFIC BELIEF IN THEIR WITCHCRAFT. AND THEY BELIEVE THAT IF THEY CRY, SHOUT OUT LOUD, MYA, MYA, WHICH IS THE SWAHILI NAME FOR WATER, THAT BULLETS WILL TURN TO WATER AND THAT THEY WON'T BE WOUNDED.

INTERVIEWER: MR BUCKLEY, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

INTERVIEWER: HERE ARE TWO MORE REFUGEES BROUGHT OUT OF PAULIS. MISS MARJORIE SCHEVERTON OF AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, AND MISS AGNES CHANDLER ROBSON OF LOS ANGELES. WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR MISSION?

MISS ROBSON: THE HEART OF AFRICA MISSION.

INTERVIEWER: DID YOU HAVE ANY EXCITEMENT GETTING OUT?

MISS ROBSON: NO WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY EXCITEMENT GETTING OUT, WHEN THE PARATROOPERS CAME...A JEEP IN FRONT OF SOLDIERS, AND A JEEP BEHIND, AND THE SIMBAS WERE ALL RUNNING AWAY INTO THE FOREST.

    INTERVIEWER: WAS THERE ANY SHOOTING?

MISS ROBSON: NO, NOT THERE, BUT WHEN WE GOT INTO PAULIS FOR THE NIGHT, THERE WAS SHOOTING PRACTICALLY ALL THE NIGHT.

INTERVIEWER: MISS SCHEVERTON, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BOTH BEEN AT THIS MISSION?

MISS SCHEVERTON: WE'VE BEEN HERE, AT THE EKBETA MISSION FOR 15 YEARS.

INTERVIEWER: ARE YOU THINKING OF GOING BACK?

MISS SCHEVERTON: WELL, IF THINGS QUIETEN AND THE LORD TELLS US TO GO BACK, WE GO BACK. BUT WE WOULDN'T GO BACK JUST AS THEY ARE NOW, BECAUSE THE PEOPLE ARE AFRAID, BECAUSE THEY'VE TOLD THEM, IF THEY ARE SEEN TALKING TO WHITES THEY WILL BE KILLED. YOU SEE, MOST OF OUR WORK LIES IN THE VILLAGES, WE GO AND STAY OUT IN THE VILLAGES AND DO VILLAGE EVANGELISM AND TEACH THE BIBLE TO THE BELIEVERS IN THE CHURCHES. AND SO OUR WORK IS IN THE VILLAGES BUT WE WOULDN'T GO BACK UNLESS THINGS QUIETEN DOWN, BUT WE ARE READY TO GO BACK IF GOD TELLS US TO.

INTERVIEWER: MISS SCHEVERTON YOU AMAZE ME, AFTER AN EXPERIENCE LIKE YOURS WHEN YOU SAY THAT THEY ARE FRIGHTENED. I THINK YOU ARE BOTH VERY BRAVE PEOPLE.

MISS SCHEVERTON: WELL, WE MAY NOT LOOK IT OUTWARDLY BUT INSIDE WE WERE QUIVERING SEVERAL TIMES WHEN THEY CAME ALONG WITH THEIR GUNS SHOOTING, AND LOOKED AT US, POINTING THEIR GUNS AND SAID THEY WOULD KILL US OFF IF WE RAN AWAY.

INTERVIEWER: WELL, I THINK YOU ARE BOTH AMAZINGLY BRAVE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
