Background: On the eve of his 75th birthday (Jan 30) Professor Theodor Heuss, President of the German Federal Republic, was filmed by VISNEWS at the Town Hall, Godesberg, receiving congratulations from members of the Diplomatic Corps.

The following morning (Jan 31) at the Villa Hammerschmidt, residence of Prof.Heuss, delegations of well-wishers arrived to offer their congratulations.

Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne was among the representatives of the church. President of Parliament, Herr Gerstenmenmeier and deputy presidents, Carl Schmidt and Jaeger were followed by members of the Cabinet, headed by Chancellor Adenauer. Defence Minister, Franz Josef Strauss led a delegation of generals.

Prof.Heuss is in his last year as President of the Federal Republic. It was the first and therefore the last time his birthday was celebrated as a public holiday. Among gifts he received, were presents of antique furniture for the small house to which he will retire next year.

School children throughout the Republic were given a holiday. Prof.Heuss stipulated that pupils should be given a proper break from classrooms on his birthday. No school speeches and no special compositions were the order of the day.
