  • Description

Icelandic and British Prime Ministers Olafur Johannesson and Edward Heath met in London on Monday (15 October) for Summit talks aimed at resuming negotiations on their year-old fisheries limits dispute.

During their first two-hour meeting at number 10 Downing Street, the two Prime Ministers agreed to work towards arrangements for an interim agreement.

Britain hopes that these summit discussions will provide a basis for continuation of the present "truce" in the Cod War. Mr. Johannesson told reporters when he arrived in London Sunday night (14 October) that "it goes without saying that I would not have come to London if I were not optimistic about a settlement. I hope that both parties will come to some acceptable interim arrangement."
Iceland unilaterally extended its fishery limits from 12 to 50 nautical miles on september I last year, to conserve the fisheries stocks on which its economy depends. Britain and West Germany claimed that this violated international law. Their trawlers have continued to fish in the disputed limits where they were involved in many incidents with Icelandic patrol boats.
