Background: Crowds of people went to the races in Amman on Sunday (25 April) - but it was a race with a difference. They were attending the annual camel race at Jordan's Royal Racing Club.

Before the 1976 Middle East war, the race was bi-annual event - held during the summer season in Amman and in the winter on the shores of the Dead Sea. Now the Royal Racing Club is considering re-introducing the winter race, but on the shores of the Aqaba Sea.

Although camels are dying out as a means of transport in Jordan, thoroughbred camels remain very popular. They are bred from the best stock in the world, to be found in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Sunday's race - under the patronage of King Hussein - was for seven baby camels. They belonged to the Desert Patrol - part of Jordan's security forces. The winning camel was 'Salwa'.

After the race, the prizes were presented by King Hussein's uncle, Senator Nasser Ben Jamil.

SYNOPSIS: First past the post with a comfortable lead was Salwa. And receiving the winner's trophy from Senator Nasser was the commander of the Desert Patrol.
