Dr. Jonas Savimbi, President of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA)?
Dr. Jonas Savimbi, President of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) has praised the mood of the recent Organisation of African Unity (OAU) emergency summit meeting, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Dr. Savimbi made his comments to newsmen at Nairobi airport, Kenya, on Tuesday (13 January) on his way back to Angola from Addis Ababa. He expressed satisfaction that for the first time the OAU has show its concern about the civil war in Angola.
At the close of the OAU conference the member countries appeared to be equally divided on the crucial question of whether or not to formally recognise the Soviet-backed Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) as the official Government of Angola, or to remain neutral in the conflict.
22 of the member countries are believed to support the MPLA, while an equal number are understood to support the coalition between Dr. Savimbi's UNITA and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) led by Mr. Holden Roberto.
Mr. Roberto also attended the OAU meeting, but the leader of the MPLA, Dr. Agostingho Neto, was not present.
