  • Description

SCORES OF POLICE WERE ON DUTY AT KENSINGTON TOWN HALL, LONDON, TONIGHT (MONDAY) WHEN SIR OSWALD MOSLEY, LEADER OF BRITAIN'S UNION MOVEMENT, ADDRESSED A PACKED PUBLIC MEETING. OUTSIDE, MEMBERS OF THE JEWISH YELLOW STAR ORGANIZATION PARADED WITH BANNER'S CARRYING ANTI-FASCIST SLOGANS.

INSIDE THE HALL, THE MEETING PASSED OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE AUDIENCE HEARD SIR OSWALD URGE THAT BRITAIN SHOULD ENTER EUROPE ON AN HONOURABLE AND PRACTICAL BASIS WHICH WAS STILL POSSIBLE. HE SAID BRITAIN SHOULD SIGN THE TREATY OF ROME FORTHWITH AND WITHOUT RESERVATIONS FRANCE AND THE OTHER COUNTRIES WERE PLEDGED TO WELCOME BRITAIN IF SHE DID THIS. SIR OSWALD PROPOSED THAT BRITAIN SHOULD OFFER TO USE HER NUCLEAR KNOWLEDGE FOR THE JOINT CREATION OF A EUROPEAN DEFENCE FORCE THAT WOULD BE INDEPENDENT OF BOTH AMERICA AND RUSSIA.

IT WAS SOME 30 MINUTES AFTER SIR OSWALD HAD LEFT THE TOWN HALL BY A SIDE ENTRANCE THAT A PASSER-BY WAS ASSAULTED, A POLICEMAN ATTACKED AND SEVERAL CARS DAMAGED BY KICKS WHEN FIGHTING BROKE OUT IN KENSINGTON HIGH STREET. SEVERAL MEN WERE ARRESTED AND TAKEN TO THE NEARBY POLICE STATION. THE TROUBLE STARTED SOON AFTER A COVERED LORRY CARRYING BANNERS AND SLOGANS USED AT THE MEETING STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND SOME MEN TRIED TO STOP IT MOVING OFF.
