Background: China's Deputy Prime Minister, Teng Hsiao-Ping, has told the French Government that China hopes a united Europe will play a more active role in international affairs.
His statement -- made during an official dinner in Paris-- followed a meeting with President Giscard d'Estaing at the Elysee Palace on Wednesday (14 May).
Mr. Teng said he and President Giscard had "a very frank conversation on the international problems that interest us".
He said they had discussed European unity and Indo-China. Mr. Teng said frank discussions would continue.
The Chinese delegation, led by Mr. Teng, later visited a model farm at Aubigny, near Melun, about 60 kilometres from Paris.
