Background: Hundreds of Scouts and Guides gathered on the slopes of Mount Kenya on Sunday (Feb.20) for the annual tribute to their founder, Lord Baden-Powell, who lies buried there. Kenya's Chief Commissioner for Scouts and Guides, Mr. J.J.M. Nyagah, led officials in a wreath-laying ceremony, after which the 600 Scouts and Guides filed past the grave saluting. Baden-Powell's movement now totals more than 12-million members in over 100 countries.

He died in 1941, aged 83.

Kenya's Chief Commissioner for Scouts and Guides, Mr. J.J.M. Nyagah, inspected the Guard of Honour drawn up outside the graveyard area. The Scouts and Guides were only a few of the thousands across Kenya commemorating Lord Baden-Powell, the ex-soldier and hero of Mafaking who founded a youth movement which now totals more than 12-million members in over 100 countries.

Numerous wreaths were brought to Nyeri for Sunday's ceremonies. Mr. Nyagah addressed the gathering and religious leaders spoke of the example and inspiration Lord Baden-Powell had given.

Then Mr. Nyagah and other officials laid their wreaths at the grave, and Boy Scouts and Girl Guides filed past saluting. Lord Baden-Powell's special contribution to youth organisations was his emphasis on individual character development. The discipline he most respected was self-reliance. He was acclaimed Chief Scout of the World at the first International Jamboree in 1920.

Today, 30 years after his death, these youngsters were saluting him.
