PHNOM PENH, THE CAMBODIAN CAPITAL, IS ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE CITIES IN SOUTH EAST ASIA.

  • Description

PHNOM PENH, THE CAMBODIAN CAPITAL, IS ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE CITIES IN SOUTH EAST ASIA. IT'S SITUATED 125-MILES (200-KMS) NORTHWEST OF SAIGON, AT THE JUNCTION OF THE MEKONG AND THE TONLE SAP RIVERS. ITS 500,000 POPULATION IS PREDOMINANTLY CHINESE.

ACCORDING TO LEGEND, THE CITY TAKES ITS NAME FROM A WOMAN OF THE 14TH CENTURY CALLED PENH, WHO LIVED ON THE SLOPES OF THE BIG HILL (PHNOM IN CAMBODIAN), OVERLOOKING THE CITY. A BRONZE STATUE OF BUDDHA, WHICH SHE FOUND IN A TREE TRUNK, ATTRACTED CROWDS OF PILGRIMS, MANY OF WHOM SETTLED IN THE AREA. IN 1434, KING PONHEA YAT BUILT HIS CAPITAL ON THE SITE, AND WHILE SUBSEQUENT KINGS SOMETIMES CHOSE OUDONG AS THEIR CAPITAL, PHNOM PENH HAS BEEN THE COUNTRY'S CAPITAL CONTINUOUSLY SINCE 1865.

PHNOM PENH IS AS PICTURESQUE AS THE LEGEND WHICH GAVE IT ITS NAME. CYCLOS, OR TRISHAS CROWD THE STREETS, FOR CARS AND OTHER MOTOR VEHICLES ARE NOT YET THE OVERWHELMING INFLUENCE ON LIFE THAT THEY ARE IN WESTERN CITIES. ELEPHANTS, HOWEVER, ARE NOT AN UNCOMMON SIGHT IN THE CITY CENTRE.

THE CITY'S CENTRAL MARKET IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST IN SOUTH EAST ASIA, AND ALMOST ALL THE TRADING IS DONE ON THE STREETS OUTSIDE THE SHOPS AND STALLS. THE MARKET SPREADS OUT ITS TENTACLES IN A STAR-LIKE FASHION. MANY OF ITS CUSTOMERS - AND ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT LIVE ALONG THE TONLE SAP RIVER - MAKE THE DAILY JOURNEY BY FERRY BOAT TO BUY THEIR FOOD.

CAMBODIA'S CAPITAL IS A CITY OF PARKS AND WIDE BOULEVARDS. IN ONE OF THE CENTRAL PARKS IS THE FINE INDEPENDENCE MONUMENT, SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL GARDENS. DOMINATING THE CITY CENTRE IS THE ROYAL PALACE, A MAGNIFICENT SERIES OF CAMBODIAN-STYLE BUILDINGS WHERE THE COUNTRY'S LEADER PRINCE SIHANOUK LIVES AND WORKS.

THE PREDOMINANT RELIGION OF CAMBODIA IS BUDDHISM, AND THE CAPITAL HAS A HOST OF TEMPLES - MANY OF THEM SURROUNDED BY TALL TREES WHICH GIVE SHADE FROM THE BURNING SUMMER SUN. THE CITY ALSO HAS A BUDDHIST UNIVERSITY.

ANOTHER FOCAL POINT OF INTEREST IS THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING. CAMBODIA IS A ONE PARTY STATE. PICTURES OF ITS LEADER PRINCE SIHANOUK, ARE ON DISPLAY IN THE GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS AND IN MANY PRIVATE HOMES.
