  • Description

Under a blazing sun July 7 Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, accompanied by the Lord Mayor of London and the Minister of Transport opened London Wall, the City of London's first motorway.

This 600 yards long, 86 feet wide thoroughfare costing GBP1,600,000 is the first section of a much longer road, Route 11, which will relieve the heavy traffic congestion in the heart of London's famous Square Mile.

With garage space for 250 cars beneath it, the new road will help solve the serious parking problem.

An integral part of the City's rebuilding programme, the road will be flanked by blocks of buildings, 220 ft. 18-stories high for use as offices with shops below, set obliquely against the highway.

After the opening ceremony the Duchess drove along the new road in an open car, and was shown the recently-discovered relics of Roman occupation, the gateway to a fort built for the defence of Londinium at the end of the first century.
