Background: Indonesian Foreign Minister, Adam Malik was greeted by well-wishers at U.N. headquarters in New York on Friday (17 September). Mr. Malik is expected to take over the Presidency of the General Assembly when the next session opens on Tuesday, 21 September. He is entering the office at a time when several important issues face the world body. Among these are the question of the admission of the People's Republic of China and the continuing situation in the Middle East. A record of 108 items are proposed for inclusion on the agenda of the 26th session of the Assembly.
Mr. Malik has served as Chairman of the Indonesian delegation to the U.N. during regular sessions of the General Assembly from 1966 to 1970. He has also served as Chairman of several annual meetings of the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE). At the 25th Commemorative Session of the United Nations in October, 1970, he was special Envoy of the President of Indonesia.
