  • Description

PRESIDENT AND MRS. NIXON YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) MADE A WHIRL-WIND VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM LASTING FIVE HOURS AND 41 MINUTES. THEY FLEW INTO SAIGON FROM BANGKOK, AND PRESIDENT NIXON MET PRESIDENT NGUYEN VAN THIEU OF SOUTH VIETNAM AND OTHER SOUTH VIETNAMESE LEADERS, AND VISITED AMERICANS TROOPS. MRS. NIXON STOPPED AT AN ORPHANAGE AND A FIELD HOSPITAL. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT AND HIS WIFE HAD EVER VISITED A WAR ZONE TOGETHER, AND THE FIRST TIME AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT HAD VISITED THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL. MR. NIXON IS CURRENTLY ON AN ASIAN TOUR.

MR. NIXON, WHO HAS NOW VISITED SOUTH VIETNAM EIGHT TIMES SINCE 1953, HIS WIFE AND THEIR AIDES, WERE TAKEN BY HELICOPTER TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN SAIGON. SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE THE TIGHTEST SAIGON HAD EVER KNOWN. MORE THAN 8,000 SPECIAL POLICE AND THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS GUARDED THE APPROACHES TO THE PALACE.

MR. NIXON THEN HAD A MEETING WITH THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE PRESIDENT AND SAID LATER THAT "WE HAVE GONE AS FAR AS WE CAN OR SHOULD GO IN OPENING THE DOOR TO PEACE AND IT IS TIME FOR THE OTHER SIDE TO RESPOND". HE SAID THAT PRESIDENT THIEU'S OFFER OF FREE ELECTIONS IN WHICH THE VIET CONG'S NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT (N.L.F.) COULD PARTICIPATE WAS "AS GENEROUS AS ANY EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF WARFARE".

MR. NIXON THEN VISITED THE BASE CAMP OF THE FIRST INFANTRY DIVISION AT DI AN, ABOUT 12 MILES (ABOUT 19 KMS) NORTH OF SAIGON, AND CHATTED WITH AMERICAN TROOPS FOR AN HOUR. HE MADE AN INFORMAL SPEECH TO ABOUT 250 TROOPS IN FULL COMBAT GEAR. THE PRESIDENT TOLD THE TROOPS THAT WHAT HAPPENS IN VIETNAM WILL HAPPEN TO PEACE AND FREEDOM IN ASIA.

HE ALSO SAID: "I SIMPLY WANT TO SAY ANY WAR IS DIFFICULT. BUT THIS WAR IS THE MOST DIFFICULT ANY ARMY HAS FOUGHT....."
MRS. NIXON VISITED AN ORPHANAGE ABOUT EIGHT MILES (12 KMS) NORTH OF SAIGON WHILE MR. NIXON WAS CONFERRING WITH PRESIDENT THIEU. A PARTY OF CHILDREN CHANTED GREETINGS TO MRS. NIXON WHO LATER TOLD THEM THAT ONE OF THEM MIGHT GROW UP TO BE PRESIDENT OF SOUTH VIETNAM. THERE ARE 774 BOYS AND GIRLS STAYING AT THE ORPHANAGE; THEIR PARENTS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR.

MRS. NIXON ALSO VISITED AN AMERICAN ARMY EVACUATION HOSPITAL NEAR SAIGON AND SPOKE TO SOME WOUNDED SOLDIERS.
