Background: Visnews filmed Feb 12 Pope John at the shrine of the Virgin of Lourdes in the Vatican Gardens where he knelt in prayer during commemorations to mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Lateran Pact.
The Pope prayed with students from Ethiopia who are guests of the Vatican. Afterwards he rose to chat with them.
The shrine is a replica of the grotto at Lourdes where the Virgin Mary reputedly appeared as a vision just over 200 years ago. The signing of the Lateran Pact ended 70 years of dispute over relation between the Catholic Church and the Italian State.
The previous day, Feb 11, the Pope spoke from the balcony of his apartments to 10,000 Romans and tourists in St. Peter's Square during commemorations of the Lateran Pact. He used the appeal by Pius XI to the world shortly before World War Two for "Peace, Peace, Peace." Pius died the day before he was to have made the appeal and the speech remained secret until this week when Pope John published it.
