  • Description

Australian John Newcombe won his third Wimbledon title in five years when he outlasted American army private Stan Smith in a three-hour five-set final to the men's singles today (Saturday), the climax of two weeks world class tennis.

Newcombe, who took the title last year and in 1967, won 6-3, 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. His powerful tennis looked unbeatable in the first set, even by Stan Smithy, acclaimed as one of the hardest-hitting tennis players today. But Smith upset the champion by winning the next two sets. John Newcombe kept up the Australian tradition at Wimbledon however by fighting back and becoming the 13th Australian in 16 years to win the Wimbledon men's singles title, the most prestigious title in world tennis.
