Meantime the latest attack on the police came overnight at the village of Zylophagou -- where a police station was attacked by explosives last week. Last night two unoccupied police houses were dynamited in a raid believed to have been carried out by Girvas supporters.

SYNOPSIS: Unrest in Cyprus continued at the weekend. In the village of Zylophagou, where the police station had been attacked with explosives the previous week, two empty police houses were dynamited on Saturday night.

Supporters of General Grivas, former guerrilla leader and campaigner for union with Greece, were blamed for the attack -- one of a series launched against police property.

At police headquarters in Nicosia the following morning, there was strict security as President Makarios leant his support to the police by attending a memorial service. During it, he called on General Grivas, who has been in hiding since returning to Cyprus, to come into the open and seek public support for his campaign for union with Greece. Murderous attacks and "terrorism", said the President, would not achieve this goal -- they would only result in national disaster.

The President unveiled a monument to policemen killed during nine years of disturbances on the island. The President added that the need to repel attacks by the "armed gangs" of General Grivas had added to the already difficult task of the police.
