  • Description

A union leader and mayoral candidate was murdered along with his driver when men armed with sub-machine guns ambushed his car in Buenos Aires on Monday (22 January).

He was Senor Julian Moreno, aged 42, an official of the Metalworkers' Union. He was standing for mayor as candidate for the Justicialist Liberation Front, a coalition headed by the Peronists, in next March's elections.

A guerrilla group known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces -- which professes to support former Argentinean President Juan Peron -- later claimed responsibility for his death.

In a communique released to the press, the group said Senor Moreno was a traitor to Peronism.

SYNOPSIS: In Buenos Aires, Argentina on Monday, two people died in this car... assassinated by men armed with sub-machine guns.

They were Senor Julian Moreno and his driver. The car was ambushed outside Senor Moreno's house in the suburb of Lanus. Senor Moreno was the local secretary of the Metalworkers' Union and candidate for local mayor in elections next March.

He was put up by the Justicialist Liberation Front, a coalition headed by the Peronist movement.

Later, a guerrilla group called the Revolutionary Armed Forces, or FAR, claimed responsibility for the killing of Senor Moreno.

The group professes to support the cause of former Argentinean President Juan Peron. In a communique released through the press, the organisation described Senor Moreno as a traitor to Peronism. The murder of Senor Moreno was the latest incident in a wave of violence brought on by enmity between rival sections of the Peronist movement. Three other people have been killed in recent weeks.
