Jazz trumpeter, Louis (Satchmo) Armstrong is dead. The 71-year-old musician, who rose from the bawdy brothel district of New Orleans to become the world's most famous trumpeter, died in his sleep at his New York home on tuesday (6 July). His death came after a long battle against illness and his death was attributed to heart failure.
Armstrong had been in hospital, near death, for three months. But, he recovered sufficiently to be released in May and gave a press conference in June at which he announced he was planning to make a come-back.
At the press conference he told reporters; "I'll definitely go back to work. After all, why should I sit around the house all day". My playing and singing's OK and I feel pretty good."
This film was shot in early July 1970 at the jazzman's 70th birthday party in Los Angeles. the previous night he had attended a concert in his honour.
