  • Description

The first shipment of food supplies for refugees in Viet Cong-held areas of South Vietnam left Copenhagen airport on Friday (4 April) in an East German aircraft.

Seventeen tons of canned meat, powdered milk and medicine were flown to Hanoi to be distributed in areas like Da Nang by a newly-opened office of the United Nations' Children's Fund.

A spokesman for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said in Geneva on the same day that a similar shipment would arrive in Saigon on Sunday (6 April).

He said the UNHCR intended to send on flight a day -- alternatively to Saigon and Hanoi -- next week.

This spokesman said the supplies were sent to Hanoi in response to a request from the Viet Cong Provisional Revolutionary Government (PRG).

Funds for emergency supplies came largely from donations which included two and a half million dollars (more than one million sterling) from Sweden and two million dollars (less than one million sterling) from Norway.
