  • Description

USHUAIA, PRINCIPAL TOWN OF THE ARGENTINIAN SECTOR OF THE ISLAND OF TIERRA DEL FUEGO - IS SELDOM VISITED BY TOURISTS. IT IS THE SOUTHERNMOST TOWN IN THE WORLD, AND IN CLEAR CONDITIONS THE MOUNTAINS BEHIND IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN VISIBLE TO SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER AS HE ROUNDED CAPE HORN ON HIS EPIC VOYAGE.

TIERRA DE FUEGO IS AN ARCHIPELAGO AT THE SOUTHERN EXTREMITY OF SOUTH AMERICA AND IS SEPARATED FROM THE MAINLAND BY THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN. THE ISLAND WAS DISCOVERED BY FERDINAND MAGELLAN, THE FAMOUS EXPLORER AFTER WHOM THE STRAIT IS NAMED, IN 1520, HE GAVE IT THE NAME -- "LAND OF FIRE".

THE ISLAND IS OWNED PARTLY BY CHILE AND PARTLY BY ARGENTINA. THE OWNERSHIP OF SOME OF THE SMALLER ISLANDS NEARBY IS DISPUTED BETWEEN THE TWO REPUBLICS.

ORIGINALLY INHABITED BY ONA AND YAHGAN INDIANS, THE ISLAND IS NOW MAINLY POPULATED BY THE DESCENDANTS OF IMMIGRANTS WHO WERE ATTRACTED THERE BY THE GOLD RUSH, THE DISCOVERY OF OIL AND THE GENERAL ECONOMIC EXPANSION OF THE REGION. IN ADDITION TO CHILEANS AND ARGENTINEANS MANY EUROPEAN NATIONALITIES ARE REPRESENTED. YUGOSLAVS ARE THE PREDOMINANT ELEMENT DERIVED FROM THE GOLD RUSH DAYS, WITH SPANIARDS, BRITISH AND ITALIANS FORMING SIMILAR MINORITIES.

SHEEP FARMING AND OIL PRODUCTION ARE THE MAIN INDUSTRIES, WITH SMALLER INDUSTRIALISATION SUCH AS CRAYFISH CANNING AT USHUAIA AND PORVENIR (IN THE CHILEAN SECTOR), LUMBER AND SEAL HUNTING.

ROADS ARE POOR AND THERE ARE NO RAILWAYS, BUT THERE ARE AIR SERVICES AND SEE COMMUNICATIONS. A REGULAR SEA SERVICE PLIES BETWEEN PORVENIR AND PUNTA ARENAS, AND NAVAL VESSELS SUPPLY NAVARINO AND USHUAIA.
