  • Description

Ghana's soccer champions Asante Kotoko were held to a I-I draw on Sunday when they clashed with Englebert, the top Congo-Kinshasa club, in the first leg of the final of African Clubs Soccer Championships.

Supporters of the Ghanaian team came from all over the country to watch the match -- one of the most important events on the African sports calendar. And they had plenty to cheer about when Kotoko took the lead midway through the first half.

Concerted Kotoko pressure paid off in a goal-mouth scramble when centre-forward Abukari headed the ball into the net.

There was no further score before the interval. But five minutes into the second half, Englebert stunned the 40,000 crowd by snatching the equaliser. Englebert won a free kick, and international striker Kalala headed home to put the Congolese champions level.

It was now the turn of Englebert, who won the championships in 1967 and 1968, to turn on the pressure. But they were unable to convert their advantage into further goals.

The two clubs meet for the second leg of the finals in Congo-Kinshasa on January 24.
