  • Description

    M. Jean Bolikango, Minister of National Defence and Information in the Ileo Government, was presented with a snake (symbol of power) when he arrived to address a large-scale meeting of members of the Bangala tribe in Leopoldville, Congo Republic, Jan 15.

This was something of a political re-emergence for 52-year old M. Bolikango. The first Congolese to hold high office under the pre-independence Belgian administration, he has managed to remain in the background during the present political turbulence. Now, as a leader of the P.U.N.A. party - comprised of Bangala tribesmen - he made an impassioned appeal for unity and charity.

Speaking of hunger, unemployment, and outside interference in the Congo's internal affairs, M. Bolikango said those who have work and food must share with those less fortunate. But, he said, such a formula must not be turned into an excuse for Communism, the main enemy of the Congo. Communism, he went on, is first and foremost a product of lies. Like a sack thrown over one's head, it stifles and blinds, and will never let its victims escape, once caught.

Colour was added to the meeting as the Bangalas - original builders of Leopoldville - became more and more excited. Drummers and dancers we wearing tribal dress provided a light entertainment to an otherwise serious occasion.
