    BRITISH TROOPS, BUSY MOPPING UP REBELS IN THE OIL-RICH SULTANATE OF BRUNEI, HAVE TAKEN SCORES OF PRISONERS IN THE PAST FEW DAYS. MANY OF THE CAPTIVES WERE ORDINARY BEFORE THEY DONNED REBEL UNIFORM.

    IN BRUNEI TOWN THIS WEEK, REBEL PRISONERS IN TATTERED CLOTHING WERE PUT ABOARD TRUCKS FOR SECURITY CENTRES. OF THE ESTIMATED 2,000 REBELS ENGAGED IN THE REVOLT, ABOUT 30 HAVE BEEN KILLED AND ABOUT 400 CAPTURED.

    THE GREATER PART OF BRUNEI AND NEIGHBOURING SARAWAK ARE NOW REPORTED QUIET, WITH THE MAIN REBELLION AID TO BE CRUSHED, THOUGH THE ARMY BELIEVES THE HARD-CORE OF THE REBELS HAVE ESCAPED CAPTURE AND FLED TO THE JUNGLE TO ORGANIZE GUERILLA WARFARE.

    MEANWHILE, THE 24-HOUR CURFEW IMPOSED IN BRUNEI TOWN WHEN THE REBELLION FLARED UP ON DECEMBER 8 HAS BEEN LIFTED FOR TWO HOURS A DAY. DURING THE TWO-HOUR BREAK, CIVILIANS ARE ALLOWED OUT TO BUY PROVISIONS, AND THE TOWN SEEMS ALMOST BACK TO NORMAL, ALTHOUGH TROOPS CONTINUE TO PATROL STREETS.
