  • Description

THE SIXTY-FOURTH INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE CONGRESS OPENED IN ROME TODAY (SUNDAY). ONE OF THE MAIN ITEMS TO BE DECIDED DURING THE CONGRESS WILL BE THE VENUES FOR THE 1972 SUMMER AND WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES.

MR. AVERY BRUNDAGE, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (I.O.C.) SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF THE CONGRESS, DECRIED INFILTRATION OF THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT BY COMMERCIALS, "POLITICAL AGENTS" AND THOSE WHO THINK VICTORY IS THE MAIN GOAL. MR. BRUNDAGE WENT ON TO SAY THAT FEW OF THE SIX-SCORE NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES UNDERSTOOD THE REAL OBJECTIVES OF THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT, AND THAT MOST OF THEM SEEMED SATISFIED TO STRIVE FOR MEDALS, IGNORING THEIR MAIN OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PROMOTING OLYMPIC PRINCIPLES IN THEIR COUNTRIES.

BEFORE AN AUDIENCE WHICH INCLUDED THE KING AND QUEEN OF GREECE AND THE ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. BRUNDAGE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE I.O.C. HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO CONVINCE POLITICAL AUTHORITIES THAT AMATEUR SPORT RECOGNISED NO CONFINES. HE DESCRIBED THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT AS A RAY OF SUNSHINE APPEARING THROUGH CLOUDS OF RACIAL ANIMOSITY, RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY AND POLITICAL CHICANERY. IT WAS , HE SAID, PERHAPS THE GREATEST SOCIAL FORCE IN THE WORLD TODAY.
