    FROM GIFU AIRFIELD, ON THE JAPANESE ISLAND OF HONSHU, JAPANESE AIR FORCE F86-F JET AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF, OCT 28, IN THE COURSE OF AN INTENSIFIED AIR PATROL PROGRAMME DESIGNED TO CHECK THE ATMOSPHERE FOR RADIO-ACTIVE FALL-OUT FOLLOWING RUSSIA'S CONTINUED SERIES OF NUCLEAR BOMB TESTS.

    WHILE THE CREWS ARE BRIEFED BY THEIR OFFICERS, THE AIRCRAFT ARE PREPARED FOR THEIR SPECIAL TASK. GROUND PERSONNEL FIT STRIPS OF ABSORBENT PAPER TO THE FORWARD WING EDGE, AND PAPER DISCS INTO FILTERS ATTACHED TO TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE WINGS.

    DURING DAILY FLIGHTS AT ALTITUDES BETWEEN TWO AND EIGHT MILES, THE AIRCRAFT TAKE SCORES OF SAMPLES OF DUST PARTICLES DRIFTING IN THE ATMOSPHERE. SAMPLES ARE ANALYSED AT THE AIR FORCE TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE IN TOKYO, AND IN EACH CASE RESULTS ARE PUBLISHED THREE DAYS LATER.
