  • Description

Officials from Spain and the European Economic Community (EEC) met in Brussels on Wednesday (8 February) and began talks on an enlarged joint trade agreement. The talks, which are being held at the EEC Commission headquarters, are expected to last several months, and will centre on Spain's application to join the community at a later stage.

SYNOPSIS: The Spanish delegation is being led by Senor Raimundo Bassols, the Spanish ambassador to the Community. Most of the negotiations will take place in Brussels with an EEC delegation which is being headed by Mr Roland de Uergolay -- the Deputy Director General for External affairs.

The outcome of the talks is expected to be a new trade agreement replacing the one signed in 1970. The Spanish have come seeking better terms for their agricultural exports to the community. They are particularly concerned with the 40 per cent tariff cut on their citrus fruit exports which compares unfavourably with the 60-80 percent given to other Mediterranean exporters. The EEC negotiators are anxious to see a tariff improvement on their exports to Spain, which at present is about 20 per cent.
