  • Description

ISRAEL'S NEW DEEP WATER PORT OF ASHDOD, SOME 17 MILES (45 KMS) SOUTH OF TEL AVIV WELCOMED ITS FIRST FOREIGN FREIGHTER YESTERDAY (SUNDAY).

THE FIRST SHIP TO CALL AT THE NEW PORT WAS THE SWEDISH FREIGHTER THE S.S VINGELAND CARRYING A CARGO OF 1,600 TONS OF POLISH SUGAR. THE ARRIVAL OF THE VINGELAND MARKS THE COMPLETION OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE NEW PORT, THE "CITRUS PHASE", WHICH PROVIDES ANCHORAGE FOR SHIPS WHICH WILL HELP EXPORT SOME FOUR MILLION CRATES OF ISRAELI CITRUS FRUIT EACH YEAR.

THE NEW PORT, WHICH IS LOCATED NORTH OF THE LACHISH RIVER, HAS AT PRESENT A CAPACITY FOR ONE MILLION TONS BUT THIS WILL LATER BE EXTENDED TO FOUR MILLION TONS WHEN ALL THE PHASES OF CONSTRUCTION ARE COMPLETED.

THE NEW PORT OF ASHDOD WILL HELP RELIEVE THE STRAIN ON ISRAEL'S OTHER PORTS AND ALSO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOUTHERN PART OF ISRAEL. APART FROM CITRUS FRUIT FROM THE GROVES LYING SOUTH OF THE RIVER YARKON, THE PORT WILL ALSO HANDLE PHOSPHATE, POTASH AND OTHER MINERAL EXPORTS FROM THE NEGEV.
