Gymnastics - and the queen of the international circuit, Nadia Comaneci, was the centre of attraction during a tour of Venezuela by a Rumanian team. But the 15-year-old who won three gold medals at the Montreal Olympics did not let the attention distract her from her performance - or practice.
SYNOPSIS: And although she's a star to everyone else, in the Rumanian team she's treated just like any other member.
At a training session in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, on Thursday (September 22) she appeared the dedicated artist. Unsmiling, disregarding the newsmen around her, she concentrated on practising her horizontal beam routine.
After a practice session that was perhaps more worthy of a competition performance, Miss Comaneci allowed newsmen ten minutes for a question and answer period. The questions were routine - how long have you been a gymnast; are you entering the 1980 Moscow Olympics? The answers were brief - since the age of six; and, I don't know.
The practice was obviously worth it. Her performance that night-certainly on the isometric bars - was almost flawless.
