    THE HIGH COURT IN NAIROBI WEDNESDAY (23 JUNE) JAILED A FORMER ASSISTANT EDUCATION MINISTER, GIDEON MUTISO, FOR NINE AND A HALF YEARS, AFTER HE PLEADED GUILTY TO CONSPIRING TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT. TWELVE OTHER CONSPIRATORS WERE JAILED EARLIER THIS MONTH ON SIMILAR CHARGES.

    MUTISO CONFESSED TO BEING THE CHAIRMAN OF A REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL, WHICH HAD PLANNED TO OVERTHROW DR. JOMO KENYATTA'S GOVERNMENT ON 8 APRIL. MUTISO SAID HE ACCEPTED THE CHAIRMANSHIP BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THE PLANS FOR THE OVERTHROW WERE IN AN ADVANCED STAGE AND WOULD SUCCEED.

    DEPUTY PUBLIC PROSECUTOR JAMES KARUGU TOLD THE COURT THAT MUTISO ALLEGED IN HIS STATEMENT THAT THE CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE STAFF, MAJOR-GENERAL J. NDOLO, WAS ALSO INVOLVED IN THE PLOT. ON THURSDAY (24 JUNE) THE MAJOR-GENERAL SUBMITTED HIS RESIGNATION, WHICH WAS ACCEPTED TO BECOME EFFECTIVE 1 JULY.
