The Prime Minister of the French Territory of Afars and Issas, Mr. Ali Aref Bourhan, arrived in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa on Thursday (19 February). He was seeking guarantees from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) that there would be no outside interference in the territory.
Mr. Aref had just flown from Kampala, Uganda, where he had talks with the OAU chairman, President Idi Amin.
He told a press conference that President Amin had assured him of his support for obtaining guarantees that no country would interfere in the territory's affairs.
Prime Minster Aref said he had also had talks with Kenyan ministers in Nairobi, and had received their full backing
Radio Uganda reported the previous day that Somalia had asked President Amin to mediate in its dispute with Ethiopia and France over the territory.
It said Somali President Siad Barre had accused France and Ethiopia of troop build-ups along the territory's borders in preparation for a full-scale attack.
Afars and Issas is on the Gulf of Aden in north-east Africa, and shares its eastern border with Somalia.
