  • Description

On Thursday (1 June) thousands of Kenyans gathered in Nairobi to celebrate the 15th anniversary of independent rule under their President, Jomo Kenyatta.

SYNOPSIS: The fifteenth anniversary of independence from British colonial rule was regarded as a milestone in Kenya's post-independence history, and there was a mass of colour and military splendour to mark the occasion.

Kenya's military forces were all represented in a colourful display of precision co-operation....a left-over of colonial influence which has been well integrated into modern-day independent Kenya. As well as members of the Army, Navy and Air Force, there were displays by the Kenyan police, the Prisons Department, youth organisations and the band of the Kenya Police Force.

It was a national day of celebration throughout Kenya, set aside to celebrate the country's development since the day of independence 15 years ago. The man presiding over the festivities was the country's President, Jomo Kenyatta, who led his country to independence from Britain in 1963. In his speech to the Kenyans and visiting dignitaries who came to attend the celebrations, he stressed his country's concern with peace and territorial integrity. The wishes of the people should always be respected, he said.

There to hear the Kenyan leader were Mrs. Kenyatta and a host of high-ranking officials from the country's military and civil services.
