(UPI) -- FORMER PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER OBSERVED HIS 74TH BIRTHDAY TODAY AND ON GROUNDS OF AGE RULED OUT A PROPOSAL BY COP NOMINEE BARRY M. GOLDWATER THAT HE MADE A FACT-FINDING MISSION TO VIET NAM.

EISENHOWER TOLD A GROUP OF WELL-WISHERS THAT HE DIDN'T THINK THAT A RETIRED GENERAL AND A RETIRED PRESIDENT SHOULD UNDERTAKE SUCH A TASK. HE SAID IT WAS A JOB FOR YOUNGER MAN.

GOLDWATER RECENTLY SUGGESTED IN HIS CAMPAIGNING THAT IF ELECTED PRESIDENT, HE WOULD ASK EISENHOWER TO GO TO THE SOUTHEAST ASIA TROUBLE AREA FOR AN ON-THE-SPOT SURVEY.

EISENHOWER ALSO EXPRESSED BELIEF THAT THE CURRENT CAMPAIGNING BETWEEN GOLDWATER AND PRESIDENT JOHNSON WAS GETTING TOO PERSONAL. HE SAID THE RIVAL CANDIDATES WERE "NOT DEBATING THE ISSUES."
ON HAND FOR THE BIRTHDAY OCCASION WERE BARRY M. GOLDWATER JR., SON OF THE COP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, AND REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CHAIRMAN. THEY FLY TO GETTYSBURG TO PRESENT THE FIVE-STAR GENERAL AND FORMER CHIEF EXECUTIVE WITH A 20-POUND CAKE INSCRIBED "HAPPY BIRTHDAY IKE." FOURTEEN CANDLES WERE ARRANGED TO READ "74".

EISENHOWER ALSO TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HE WASN'T PESSIMISTIC OVER REPUBLICAN CHANGES FOR VICTORY IN THE NOVEMBER BALLOTING. "THE POLLS ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT," HE COMMENTED.

AND ON REACHING 74, HE OFFERED THIS ADVICE: "EVERYONE OUGHT TO GET SOME FUN OUT OF EVERY DAY."
THE EX-PRESIDENT EXPRESSED HOPE THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WOULD NOT LOSS THEIR SENSE OF HUMOR. THEN TURNING ON HIS FAMED GRIN, HE ADDED: "LIFE ISN'T WORTH LIVING WITHOUT IT."
EISENHOWER INTERRUPTED A FULL WORKING DAY AT HIS OFFICE ON THE GETTYSBURG COLLEGE CAMPUS TO RECEIVE THE REPUBLICAN DELEGATION WHICH ALSO INCLUDED LIBBY MILLER, 20-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER OF THE REPUBLICAN VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

HE SAID ME AND MRS. EISENHOWER PLANNED NO SPECIAL PARTY ON THE OCCASION BUT HAD A DINNER ENGAGEMENT WITH RETIRED GEN. ARTHUR ??. NEVINS WHO MANAGES HIS FARM HERE.

HE ALSO TOOK NOTE OF THE SUNNY OCTOBER WEATHER THAT PREVAILED AND INDICATED THAT HE WOULD TRY TO GET IN A FEW HOLES OF GOLD BEFORE THE DAY WAS OVER.
