Background: A NEW OPERA HOUSE WAS OPENED IN WEST BERLIN SEPT 24 BY PRESIDENT LUEBKE. THE FIRST OPERA PERFORMED WAS "DON GIOVANNI".

BUILT AT A COST OF OVER GBP2 MILLION, THE NEW OPERA HOUSE IS CONSTRUCTED OVER THE SITE OF THE GREAT OPERA HOUSE THAT WAS BOMBED DURING WORLD WAR TWO. IT IS ON THE BISMARKSTRASSE BETWEEN RICHARD WAGNER STRASSE AND KRUMMERSTRASSE.

FRITZ BORNEMAN, THE ARCHITECT, HAS INCORPORATED THE BOX-LIKE GERMAN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURAL STYLE. THE FRONTING ON BISMARKSTRASSE IS A PLAIN SLAB OF CEMENTED ROCKS, WITH LARGE WINDOWS ON THE SIDE STREETS.

INSIDE, ALL IS AUSTERE AND MODERN. SCULPTURES BY JEAN ARY, HENRY MOORE, AND KENNETH ARMITAGE, AMONG OTHERS, ARE PROMINENT IN THE DECOR OF THE FOYERS. THE AUDITORIUM ITSELF IS ALSO SEVERE AND CLINICALLY MODERN. SIGHT LINES ARE PERFECT FROM EVERY ONE OF THE 1,800 SEATS, AND THE ACOUSTICS ARE SUPERB.
