  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly ended its 27th session with a "mild" call for countries to submit ideas on combating terrorism.

The final act in weeks of debate on terrorism came on Monday (18 Dec.) when the assembly passed a resolution which expressed deep concern over increasing acts of violence which endangered human life and urged states to seek peaceful solutions to the underlying causes of violence.

The resolution, called up from the legal committee, also reaffirmed the inalienable right to self-determination of all peoples under colonial and racist regimes.

But both the committee and the Assembly withheld any condemnation of terrorism.

Arab and African members approved the resolution, on the grounds that a strong resolution might be used against legitimate "liberation movements".

The United States, with Israel, was among those voting against the resolution, which was carried by 76 votes to 35, with 17 abstentions.

SYNOPSIS: The United Nations General Assembly has just ended its twenty-seventh session with a resolution on terrorism. But the terms were condemned as too mild by many delegates....such as American Ambassador George Bush.

Israel's Yosef Tekoah also protested about the resolution.

But there was an immediate response to the Israeli attack on Arab members from the Iraqi delegate. Speaking in French, he called Mr. Tekoah's allegations "slanderous" and pointed out that the Arab countries were all free states, with independent sovereignty.

They were not the tools of international colonialism.

Then came the voting on the resolution, which expressed deep concern over increasing acts of violence which endangered human life, but reaffirmed the right to self-determination of all peoples. It called for countries to submit ideas on combating terrorism.

Resolution carried....by seventy-six votes to thirty-five, with seventeen abstentions.
