    A big sport and song festival held in northern Spain on Sunday (3 July) was used by various separatist groups to demand autonomy for their regions. The festival was held at Basauri near Bibao and was attended by sportsmen and artists from all over Spain.

    SYNOPSIS: About 5,000 people turned up for the festival which lasted 12 hours. The day began with athletics events, followed by young dancers wearing tractional costumes.

    The highlights included a man who lifted a stone weighing more than 330 pounds (150 kilograms) and tug of war competition
    A couple in their seventies played traditional instruments and sang old Basque songs.

    Such occasions in Spain are inevitably used for political purposes. As the festival went purposes. As the festival went on, party poetical workers were busy erecting posters and banners. These are the workers who have lost their job with two metallurgical firms.

    The separatists were demanding autonomy for the various 'nations' of Spain such as Catalans, Gallegos and Basques. They also took the opportunity of publicising the March of Liberty which will start on Sunday(10 july).
