West London side Queen's Park Rangers - the only southern side with a chance of the English League soccer championship - maintained Saturday (17 January).

Rangers were without injured England captain Gerry Francis, but midfield man Don Masson came to the fore with two goals in an outstanding display.

Rangers have had a lean time recently but they began with a continuous spell of attack which had the Birmingham defence at full stretch for long periods.

Birmingham held out until the 19th minute when goalkeeper Latchford and defender Burns missed a cross by Rangers' John Beck who was replacing Francis. The ball came to Masson who scored a simple goal from close in.

Masson added a second goal quarter of an hour later when he put his header immaculately inside Latchford's left hand post from Hollins' cross and he would have had a hat-trick had not Latchford made an excellent save minutes later.

Unaccountably Ranger lost their bustle in the second half and Birmingham's Trevor Francis was allowed through the middle to score for the Midlanders. Birmingham came more and more back into the game but Rangers held their 2-1 lead to full time.
