The fifteenth anniversary of the establishment of the Army in Upper Volta was celebrated on Saturday (1 November) under special circumstances. The ceremony was attended by the country's head of state, president General Sangoule Lamizana.
Compared with previous years the ceremony was affected by the austerity of the times, and the big parade, which was usually mounted in La Place Du Trois Janvier, was omitted this year.
Specially invited guests at the ceremony included members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Government, and other high-ranking members of the armed forces. In a speech to the troops on parade, the Minster of Defence, Mr. Baba Sy, told them that they must unite to accomplish their task of defending the country.
Mr. Baba Sy underlined the importance of sacrifice and suffering in military ideals.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of medals and awards to individual soldiers. A large number of civilian policemen who were present also received honours and awards.
The presentations were made by the Minister of Defence, the Minister off Finance, the Secretary for the Army, and the Commander of the armed forces in Ouagadougou.
