  • Description

MILOVAN DJILAS, FORMER YUGOSLAV VICE-PRESIDENT WHO HAS FREED UNDER AN AMNESTY ON DECEMBER 31 AFTER SERVING HALF OF AN EIGHT-YEAR SENTENCE IMPOSED IN 1962, WAS INTERVIEWED EARLY IN THE NEW YEAR.

DJILAS, ONCE REGARDED AS THE MAN MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED PRESIDENT TITO, WAS IMPRISONED FOR ALLEGEDLY DISCLOSING STATE SECRET IN HIS BOOK - "CONVERSATIONS WITH STALIN" - PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES FROM A SMUGGLED MANUSCRIPT. HE HAD BEEN RELEASED ON PAROLE ONLY THE YEAR BEFORE (1961) WHILE SERVING A NINE-YEAR SENTENCE FOR ANOTHER BOOK - "THE NEW CLASS" - ALSO PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES, WHICH CRITICISED NOT ONLY STALINISM, BUT COMMUNISM ITSELF.

IN THE PAST YEAR PRESIDENT TITO HAD BEGUN BOLD REFORMS DESIGNED TO SEPARATE THE FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT AND PARTY AND DISPENSE THE POWERS - BITTERLY CRITICISED BY DJILAS - THEY HELD IN THE PAST.

AFTER HIS RELEASE DJILAS TRAVELLED WITH HIS WIFE STEFANIA AND HIS 14-YEAR OLD SON TO THEIR FLAT IN BELGRADE.
