    A five-day meeting of three specialised committees, which have the responsibility of preparing for the African Ministerial Conference on Trade, Development and Monetary Problems, was opened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday (26 March).

    The purpose of the meeting was twofold: to consider Africa's trade development and monetary problems, and prepare an agenda for the forthcoming African Ministerial Conference in Abidjan, Ivory coast (9-13 May).

    The opening session was addressed by H.E. Ato Ketema Yifru, Ethiopia's Minister of Commerce, Industry and tourism. In his speech, he spoke of Africa's achievements over the past 10 years, and the need for a concerted African effort to overcome future problems facing the continent.

    SYNOPSIS: At Africa Hall in Addis Ababa on Monday, delegates from African countries met to prepare the agenda for the African Ministerial Conference on Trade, Development and Monetary Problems which will be held in Abidjan in May.

    The opening session was addressed by H.E. Ato Ketema Yifru, Ethiopia's Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.

    The agenda for this meeting was prepared by a drafting committee of African experts which met earlier in March.

    In the course of the five-day meeting, the African delegates were divided into three specialised committees. The first considered the participation of African states in multilateral trade. The second examined the present international monetary situation, and submitted proposals for reform. And the third, drafted concrete measures for the promotion of regional co-operation in Africa.... The proposals will form the basis of the African Ministerial Conference in Abidjan.

    In his opening speech, the Ethiopian Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism spoke of Africa's achievements over the past ten years, and the need for a concerted African effort to overcome future problems facing the continent.
