  • Description

RAUNO AALTONEN, THE 28-YEAR-OLD RALLY ACE FROM TURKU IN FINLAND, TODAY (FRIDAY) WAS DECLARED WINNER OF THE 1967 MONTE CARLO RALLY --- THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST TEST OF WINTER MOTORING SKILL.

AALTONEN AND HIS BRITISH CO-DRIVER, HENRY LIDDON, DRIVING A BMC MINI-COOPER, WON NARROWLY FROM OVE ANDERSSON (SWEDEN) AND JOHN DAVENPORT (BRITAIN) IN A LANCIA FULVIA. THIRD WERE THE BRITISH PAIR, VIC ELFORD AND DAVID STONE, WHO DROVE A PORSCHE.

AALTONEN'S WINNING MARGIN IN TERMS OF TIME WAS LESS THAN 12 SECONDS, MAKING IT ONE OF THE CLOSEST FINISHES N THE RALLY'S HISTORY. HIS SUCCESS CONTINUED THE FINE PERFORMANCES OF BRITISH MINI-COOPER CARS IN RECENT YEARS. LAST YEAR THESE CARS FILLED THE FIRST THREE PLACES BUT WERE LATER DISQUALIFIED ON A LIGHTING TECHNICALITY.

"THE FLYING FINN", AALTONEN IS A GARAGE PROPRIETOR AND WAS THIRD IN THE RALLY IN 1965.

A SWEDISH HOUSEWIFE, MRS. SYLVIA OSTERBERG, FINISHED 25TH IN THE OVERALL CLASSIFICATION AND WON THE LADIES CUP. THE TEAM PRIZE WENT TO THE FRENCH FIRM, RENAULT, WHILE LANCIA TOOK THE TROPHY FOR THE THREE BEST-PLAYED CARS OF THE SAME MAKE.

AALTONEN SNATCHED VICTORY THROUGH A TREMENDOUS EFFORT IN LAST NIGHT'S FINAL SPEED TEST OVER SNOW-COVERED ROADS IN THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE MONACO.
