  • Description

VISNEWS filmed at the Part de Bagatelle, Paris, opening - June 9 - of the international competition of new types of rose, and continuing until June 28.

Ninety-one rose bushes are entered, fifty of them coming from countries outside France. Awards for 1959 will be decided on by an international jury, who are to vote during the course of a short cruise on the river Seine. A notable member of the jury is the prince Foujita, filmed by our cameraman with Harry Wheatcroft, the British rose specialist.

Each year's selection of new roses is the product of careful cross-fertilizations by experts, who plant their exhibits at the Pare de Bagatelle several months before the competition opens. Each competitor presents a number of different kinds of rose.

The Parc de Bagatelle - scene of sporting gallantry during the 18th century, and of more demure pleasures during the 19th - is new famous for the various horticultural exhibitions held there.
