Background: The tiny Arab Emirate of Qatar, a minute enclave in the oil-rich Arabian Gulf states, is expanding its programme to beam its radio 'Voice of Qatar' to the entire Arab world and beyond.

On Tuesday (2 September) the Emir - Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad el-Thani - opened a new radio transmitting station of medium-distance range to add to the current radio station in the capital, Doha.

Qatar - with a total population of 170,000 people, most of them in or around the capital - also has a colour transmission television station. The new transmitter is located in the north of the 100-mile (160 kilometre) - long peninsular.
