Background: MEN OF THE BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE ARE HELPING ORNITHOLOGISTS IN CYPRUS TO RING RARE ELEONORA FALCONS AT AKROTIRI.

THE FALCONS NEST ON THE STEEP CLIFFS OVERLOOKING THE MEDITERRANEAN AT AKROTIRI. TO REACH THEM, MEMBERS OF THE R.A.F. MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM USED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT TO GET DOWN THE CLIFF-FACE.

THEN THEY PUT THE YOUNG FALCONS IN BASKET THAT WERE HAULED UP TO THE TOP, WHERE EXPERTS FROM BRITAIN AND THE CYPRUS ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY WERE WAITING. THE RINGS THEY FASTENED ROUND THE FLEDGLING'S LEGS HAD BEEN NUMBERED BY THE BRITISH NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, AND WILL GIVE INFORMATION ON THE BIRD'S MOVEMENTS WHEN THEY HAVE REACHED MATURITY.

THE THREE BRITISH ORNITHOLOGISTS WHO HAD BROUGHT THE RINGS FROM LONDON WERE MR. ERIC MACHELL, MR. JOHN LATHAM AND MR. FRANK WALKER. AFTER THE YOUNG BIRDS HAD BEEN RINGED THEY WERE LOWERED DOWN TO THE AIRMEN ON THE CLIFF FACE AND PUT BACK IN THEIR NESTS.
