Background: It was supposed to be the day that the Argentine Army's Fourth Air Force Brigade showed how efficient it is in the field. Manoeuvres were underway in the province of Cordoba in central Argentina, and a new plastic platform, made by the Army and Air Force, was ready to be tested. The platform is designed to cushion parachuted item-including troops-as they reach the ground. The idea and the reality did not quite coincide every time.
SYNOPSIS: when the exercise started at the Lomas del Territo Army Testing Grounds, everything seemed straightforward. The new platform looked good and the equipment was well fastened, ready to be dropped by parachute from a Hercules c-130 aircraft.
It was all carefully checked and put on board, and the Hercules, loaded with new platform, field gun and soldiers, prepared for take off.
With soldiers on the ground waiting for the drop, the Hercules flew overhead. First thing to drop was a jeep, and everything went according to plan. Out came the jeep, the parachute opened, and the vehicle floated down for a perfect landing. So far so god, but that was where the success story ended.
Next out was large shipment of arms, and it plummeted to earth with a bump. It left the plane all right, but there was trouble with the parachute. The container burst open on hitting the ground.
The it was the turn of the field gun. The plane circled the dropping zone, but there was no drop. First it would not come out, then it was decided not to risk the plastic platform.
