  • Description

Five hundred students of Witwatersrand University, demonstrating against imprisonment of emergency detainees without trail by the South African government, clashed with police in Johannesburg, South Africa, June 3.

Fifty police barred the students route as they emerged from the University, and a police officer told them through a megaphone, "I am ordering you to stop this procession immediately. If you fail to do so I shall be obliged to use violence." When the students refused to disperse, police lined up and pushed them back to the University. Placards were confiscated, and six students - including three girls - taken away in police cars. A few fire crackers were also thrown, by students at police, and by anti-demonstration students at the placard-carriers.
