  • Description

Austrian ski-idol, Karl Schranz, received a hero's welcome when he returned to Vienna on Tuesday (8 Feb) after being barred form taking part in the Sapporo Winter Olympics.

Schranz was disqualified by the president of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Avery Brundage, because he has allegedly been involved in commercial advertising. His disqualification brought a threat from the rest of the Austrian team that they would boycott the Games. However, they decided to stay in Sapporo after a personal appeal from Schranz.

Ten thousand people were at the airport in Vienna to greet Schranz and thousands more lined the streets as he was driven in an open car through the centre of the city.

SYNOPSIS: Vienna Airport on Tuesday - and a hero's welcome for the champion skier, Karl Schranz, home after being barred from the Winter Olympics. Ten thousand people crowded vantage points around the airport to cheer as Schranz stepped from his plane.

Austria's Minister for Sport and Education, Dr. Fred Sinowatz was there to greet Schranz. The skier's disqualification from the Games came near to casting a pall over the whole contest at Sapporo. The disqualification was announced by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Avery Brundage - who alleged Schranz had been involved in commercial advertising. Angry Austrian team-mates threatened to boycott the Games - but finally agreed to compete after an emotional appeal from Schranz. The skier's welcome home was ecstatic.

After the airport welcome - a ceremonial drive through the centre of Vienna. Thousands of Austrians lined the route - and the placards and banners they carried indicated strong support for Schranz.

The drive was to end with a reception for Karl Schranz by the Austrian Chancellor, Bruno Kreisky. Meanwhile in Austria the disqualification of the skier has become a political issue - as opposition parties attack the Socialist Government's handling of Olympic sport.
